How to choose the right duvet cover
Have you ever wondered how often you should change your duvet cover? How do you get a stain out of your duvet cover? And do you find it hard to choose the right one? Picking a duvet cover can be a bit challenging, and that is why we have created this guide for you:
-
Size: The size of your duvet cover is by far the most important factor to consider when choosing a duvet cover. The cover needs to fit snugly around the duvet. There should not be too much space around the duvet as it will otherwise move around. As mentioned above, we carry duvet covers in several sizes so choose the size that fits your duvet.
-
Material: Duvet covers come in many different materials, and it is very individual what people prefer. Poly-fibre is for instance a great material if you struggle with night sweats, as the small fibres allow moisture to evaporate instead of absorbing it. If you have the budget for it, you can also choose a silk duvet cover. Organic bamboo or cotton are also lovely materials to sleep in.
-
Closing feature: Duvet covers have a closure feature, such as zippers or buttons. Perhaps you prefer one over the other, or perhaps this is less important to you.
-
Design and colour: Your duvet cover takes up quite a bit of space, so you want to make sure you love the design and colour of your duvet cover. As mentioned earlier, our duvet covers come in various designs and colours so we probably also have one that suits your style. Solid colours are generally a great choice, however, if you want to decorate your bedroom around the duvet cover, you can also opt for flower patterns, stripes, or similar.
-
Budget: Lastly, you need to consider how much you are willing to spend on your duvet cover. At vidaXL, we offer affordable duvet covers, however, it’s still a good idea to consider your budget before you start browsing our bedding sets.
With these things in mind, you should be able to choose the right duvet cover in no time.
Which duvet closure should you choose?
We already touched upon this briefly above but let us dive a little bit more into the topic of duvet closures. At vidaXL, you can get covers with these closures:
-
Envelope: Duvet covers with an envelope closure feature an internal pocket at the open end of the cover that securely holds the duvet in place. These types of covers are typically a bit shorter as they require a fit snug around the duvet to ensure the duvet doesn’t fall out. If it’s poorly fitted, the duvet often falls out of the cover during the night.
-
Zipper: Here there is a zipper at the open end, which you can zip so the duvet stays inside. These types of duvets are usually very effective, however, some zippers can unfortunately tear your duvet so just be careful when using the zipper.
-
Button: This one is similar to the zipper-styled duvet cover - it is just buttons instead of a zipper. Some have internal buttons which create a nice, sleek look.
At the end of the day, it’s all about personal preference, and you should choose the one you like the most.
How to make your bed
You might be thinking that making a bed is very easy, but it is almost an art. So allow us to share our favourite way to make the bed:
-
First of all, ensure that you start with a clean surface. All pillows, duvets, blankets, quilts, and anything else should be removed.
-
Now it’s time to put the sheet on the bed. Start by identifying which side is long and which is short. Start with the long end. Fit one corner over the top edge by the head of the bed and then extend to the foot on the same side. Travel clockwise until you reach the last corner. Ensure the sheet is securely fitted on the mattress, and smooth out any wrinkles.
-
If you have a top sheet, now is the time to put that one. You can follow the same steps as above.
-
If you would like to, you can make what is called hospital corners. You do this by ensuring the top sheet is placed squarely on the bed with equal amounts of material hanging from both sides. Tuck the sheet into the foot of the bed. There should be a little bit of sheet hanging down from each side. Lift the material and lay it on the surface. Now you should see that there is a triangular piece of material dangling, which you can tuck underneath the mattress. Now you can tuck the last piece of fabric in. It is actually very similar to wrapping a present.
-
Next up is putting the duvet cover on the duvet. We personally love turning the cover inside out and reaching our arms inside to grasp each corner. You then grab the corners of the duvet and shake the duvet until the cover comes up. This is such an easy way to put on a duvet cover.
-
Put pillow cases on your pillows as well and place them on the bed. Remember to fluff the pillows first.
-
Lastly, you can add a finishing touch by placing throw pillows, throw blankets, or similar on the bed.
Voilá. Now you have a beautifully made bed that will feel like an absolute dream to sleep in.
Tips and tricks for a good night’s sleep
Now that you have your new duvet cover and you have made your bed, you are ready to climb into bed and get a good night’s sleep. So let us look at some healthy habits to ensure a good sleep, so you can wake up well-rested and ready to tackle the day.
-
First of all, remember to wash your sheets and bed linen regularly. You should do so once a week or every two weeks. This will make your bed lovely to sleep in.
-
Avoid artificial and blue light at night. In fact, we recommend switching off all electronics one hour prior to going to bed. Instead of scrolling through your phone, you could read a book.
-
Avoid drinking caffeine later in the day, as caffeine can be bad for your sleep.
-
If you nap during the day, make sure that they are power naps and not long naps.
-
Also, try to avoid alcohol as it worsens the quality of your sleep.
-
Try going to sleep and waking up at the same time.
-
Sleep in a cool, dark, and quiet room.
