How to safely install a TV wall mount
1. Figure out the wall type
Before you start installing your TV wall mount, it's essential to figure out the type of wall you'll be mounting it on. Different wall types require different installation methods and fixings.
The most common types of walls in homes are plasterboard (drywall) and brick. If you're working with a brick wall, you'll have more flexibility in placement, but you'll need masonry fixings. For plasterboard walls, it's crucial to locate the wooden studs behind the plaster, as these will provide the strength needed to support the TV. If the studs don’t align with your desired TV position, you may need special plasterboard fixings to distribute the weight evenly.
2. Mark where to position the TV
Once you’ve determined the wall type, it’s time to figure out where you want to place your TV. Think about the height at which you want to mount it for optimal viewing comfort. A general rule of thumb is to position the TV at eye level when seated, but you can adjust this based on your preferences. If you're using a tilting or swivel mount, you may want to mount the TV higher so you can angle it down for better viewing.
You can experiment with the placement by holding up a cardboard cutout of your TV or simply using masking tape on the wall to visualise different positions. Keep in mind the viewing angles from multiple areas of the room, especially if you have an open-plan space.
3. Secure the bracket
Now that you've decided on the TV's position, it's time to mark where you'll install the mounting bracket. Use a spirit level to ensure the bracket is straight—this is crucial to avoid a crooked installation. Position the bracket against the wall and mark the spots where you'll need to drill holes for the fixings. Make sure to measure twice and check everything carefully before drilling. You may want to ask someone to help you hold the bracket in place while you mark the drill points. Taking time here will ensure that the TV mount sits level and secure once it’s installed.
4. Attach the TV to the bracket
With your measurements and markings in place, it’s time to secure the bracket to the wall. If you’re drilling into brick or masonry, use the appropriate wall plugs or anchors. For wooden studs, you can directly screw into them. Drill holes where you’ve marked, then insert the anchors or wall plugs. Once the fixings are in place, attach the mounting bracket, ensuring it’s still level. This step is crucial to avoid having to redo the installation later if the mount isn't aligned correctly.
Before drilling, make sure to use a stud finder or detector to check for any hidden pipes or wires in the wall to avoid damage.
5. Connect cables and complete installation
Once the bracket is securely in place, it’s time to attach your TV to the mount. Most mounts come in two parts: one that attaches to the wall and another that attaches to the back of your TV. Lay your TV flat on a soft surface to avoid damaging the screen, and then line up the holes on the TV with the corresponding mount bracket. Secure the bracket to the TV using the provided screws.
After the bracket is attached to the TV, you can connect any necessary cables—such as HDMI, power cords, or antenna cables. Be sure to do this before lifting the TV onto the mount, as it can be difficult to connect cables once the TV is on the wall.
Finally, carefully lift the TV onto the wall bracket, and if necessary, get a friend to help with lifting if the TV is heavy. Make any final adjustments to the angle, and your installation is complete!
